Comida Mexicana

For Valentine's Day this year, we decided to try a place with 29 years of history. That's as old as I am! Around the corner of Telok Kurau, near my old secondary school is a line of shophouses, one of them housing the most intricately decorated Mexican place I've seen so far.

We started off our meal with these Jalapeno poppers. My taste buds were not prepared for the crispiness and creaminess that came in these little packages. Decorated with drizzles of sour cream, a dollop of secret red sauce and a sprinkling of cilantro leaves. Resting on a bed of red salsa. Sounds like pigs in a blanket, doesn't it? But these poppers left quite the impression in my mouth as they had whole jalapenos in them! What a way to start our meal.

Next we had these deep fried Enrolladas. We'd originally wanted to try the Chimichanga, but figured we wouldn't even make it halfway through. So to satisfy our curiosities, we decided on these smaller versions instead. Filled with chicken and guacamole and then deep fried till crispy golden brown, I really loved these! They were the absolute show stopper for me and a must get every time I go back. I still think about the initial crunch and the warmth that seeped into my mouth from that very first bite...

Our main dish was the pulled pork with guacamole and 2 different sauces. The red one was spicier and the green one had more of a bite to it. The guacamole was a creamy flavour filled dream! In fact, it was so good we had to order another large portion.

Turns out the Carnitas were supposed to be eaten as a taco haha! They provided us with 4 soft tortillas in this peek-a-boo blanket to keep them warm. I think out of all the dishes this was my least favourite. Something about the pork being too oily didn't fit well with my Chinese pallet. All I could think of was Sio Ba... But the vinegar in the green salsa did help balance the flavours out abit, and the guacamole gave it an extra freshness. I still enjoyed it!

Overall though, I'm still debating if I'd go back. Maybe try something else on the menu next time? It was pretty reasonably priced overall (~$60/pax for 3 plates and a jug of drink) and the Enrolladas were to die for. Definitely would consider!
